Mailman 3 will indeed not be a lot of fun.

Mailman 2 - 3 is a migration I've done recently on my home mailing list server. It was not pleasant. Mailman3 has got massive second system effect problems. From a user and web interface perspective it's a great improvement over Mailman 2, but from an administrative perspective it is horrible. The complexity is everywhere. The documentation all assumes you are a fluent python programmer. I think this is a massive user experience fail. If your application is so complex, and has so little basic functionality implemented, that your documentation consists of descriptions of how to fire up an interactive python session and start typing code at it, that is just wrong.

The complexity makes the job for the package maintainers almost impossible, hence the recent removal of Mailman, which caught me by very unfortunate surprise (it's not mentioned in the release notes that it's been removed from Ubuntu 22.04).

My mailman3 install is now from upstream, installed in a virtualenv. It's the only way I could get the damned thing to work at all on Ubuntu 22.04.
